To my delight, I heard an amazing thing on the radio today.
On the 30th of January, 1972, 13 innocent civil rights activists were shot dead by British Army Paratroopers, in Derry, Ireland. Some injured activists were even shot, while trying to flee. In total 26 people were shot. British Army Paratroopers claimed they were fired upon by IRA militants, and were merely defending themselves. It has been nearly 40 years ,and countless investigations have been made into the matter on both sides. Many people the world over, have felt since then, that the people killed, were innocent, and the Paratroopers lied to protect themselves, because they had in essence, murdered helpless activists.
Besides it gaining notoriety in the U2 song, it was something that I was really interested in for a while, and the Northern/Southern Ireland conflict was something I took a minute to read about.
Today, it was announced by Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron, that due to an investigation done by Lord Saville, over the course of 12 years, that all 13 activists killed were innocent of any attacks, that British Troops did fire first, and lastly that British troops lied to protect themselves.
I think this is a day for the history books.
