Listen - We Sing Like Jailbirds by Picture Atlantic
First the thought and then the seed
I am parched and beyond peace
It’s not like I enjoy the act
I just need to drown this panic attack
There’s really nothing here to see
We sing like jailbirds when we drink
We’ve gone a couple cups too deep
We sing like jailbirds when we drink
My holy father sheds a tear
and I repent each time I’m here
Worried more than I should be
A cup of ignorance for me
There’s really nothing here to see
We sing like jailbirds when we drink
You really shouldn’t be calling me
We sing like jailbirds when we drink
“The song came about at a time that a lot of my friends were drinking maybe more than they should have been. The things I heard them say while drunk, were pretty intense. Things they definitely wouldn’t have said to someone while they were sober. Yet, they were things that they truly felt or were thinking about. At the same time, I was also trying to suss out how much even I should be drinking at any given time, and I sort of muse on the idea for myself personally. A Jailbird is convict or prisoner, and when they say that someone is ‘singing’ it means they have snitched on someone or become a grass. It’s like the alchohol turned all these people into sweating, confessing, nervous convicts under a bright light. I guess the bright light was their own in the end.” -Nik
